Schema

Schema.org is a collaborative, community-driven initiative that provides a standardized “language” or dictionary of structured data tags to help search engines understand the content of web pages.

Here is exactly what it does and why it matters:

  • Clarifies Content Meaning: While standard HTML tells a browser how to display text (e.g., as a heading), Schema tags tell search engines what that text is—distinguishing, for instance, between a movie title, a person’s name, or a product’s price.
  • Powers Rich Snippets: By using these tags, your page can appear in search results with enhanced visual features like review stars, recipe images, or price listings, which often lead to higher click-through rates.
  • Universal Industry Standard: It was founded and is maintained by major search engines, including Google, Microsoft (Bing), Yahoo, and Yandex, ensuring that all major crawlers recognize the same set of definitions.
  • Broad Versatility: The vocabulary covers thousands of “types” including local businesses, articles, events, recipes, and products, helping search engines categorize almost any kind of information.

In practice, this is typically implemented using the JSON-LD format, which Google recommends as the most efficient way to add these metadata “labels” to your site’s code.
